Right then, that is it from this first encounter, where West Indies take an early lead with a convincing performance. They will look to seal it next one while South Africa will fight hard to level the series. The two teams will battle it out again in the 2nd T20I on 26th May, Sunday. That match will begin at 12.30 am IST (7 pm GMT, Previous Day), but as you know, you can always join us early for all the build-up to the game. Until then, cheers and goodbye!

Brandon King, the victorious skipper of West Indies is also the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his fabulous knock. He says that it was important to win and he is happy with the way his team played in this game. Adds that they knew they had to go hard against the new ball as it would have gotten tougher after that. Tells that they had 200-220 on their mind with the wickets in hand, but it was not easy on this wicket. Praises Gudakesh Motie and says that he is a smart and skillful bowler who varies his pace and knows the conditions well. Credits Matthew Forde for his comeback and says he has a lot of confidence and getting early wickets should give him even more confidence. Ends by saying that they have had some chats about how they will play in the World Cup and says that he was most impressed by his bowlers in this game.

Rassie van der Dussen, the captain of South Africa says that they took a bit long to get into the game and the first 10 overs is where the opposition won the game and 150 was a par score on this track. Adds that the wicket just played a bit differently than anticipated and the tactical changes came late but they will take the learning and will be better in the next game. On Andile Phehlukwayo, he says that in these conditions, he is very tough to get away and adds that Ottniel Baartman was someone who summed up the conditions well and is glad that he was able to make his debut. End by saying that they still got 50 runs in the Powerplay and had a couple of batters in but lost wickets in the middle phase and lauds Reeza Hendricks for the way he played.

Presentation Time...

Earlier in the game, West Indies posted a decent total on the board courtesy of a fabulous fifty from skipper Brandon King along with good contributions from Kyle Mayers and Roston Chase. However, they would have still been disappointed as with the start that they got, they should have scored something around 200 or even more. South African bowlers did well after the Powerplay and pulled things back to restrict the hosts. Andile Phehlukwayo was exceptional and picked up three wickets while debutant Ottniel Baartman was also brilliant and ended with three scalps as well. Gerald Coetzee chipped in with one too. While chasing, South Africa could not really get going, but Reeza Hendricks was the lone warrior for them registering his highest individual score in this format but ending up on the losing side.

West Indies, on the other hand, were fantastic with the new ball. Matthew Forde set the tone by getting rid of QDK in the first over. Roston Chase followed that with another wicket with the help of some sharp glove work from Andre Fletcher. Shamar Joseph added more woes to the Proteas with his maiden T20I wicket putting the visitors on the back foot. They allowed a bit of a partnership in the middle but the introduction of Gudakesh Motie after the drinks break proved to be game-changing. He removed the opposition skipper with his first delivery and dismissed Wiaan Mulder for a duck in the same over. Obed McCoy bowled well as well in the middle phase and got a couple of crucial wickets. They did take a bit of a beating from Reeza Hendricks but Forde closed the game in the last over getting the last two wickets.

South Africa were rocked early as Quinton de Kock was dismissed in the first over right after playing a beautiful straight drive. Things got even worse when debutant Ryan Rickelton lost his wicket and Matthew Breetzke too followed suit after a few lusty blows. Reeza Hendricks struggled initially but held one end and steadied the ship along with his skipper Rassie van der Dussen. However, that did not last long as they added 42 runs together before the skipper perished right after the drinks break. That started a collapse for them as they went from 77/3 to 108/8 in a blink of an eye as no middle-order batter could make much impact. Hendricks fought a lone battle scoring a valiant half-century. He needed some support from the other end that never arrived. Hendricks still did not give up and continued to fight from one end. He was finally dismissed in the last over after scoring 87 off just 51 balls as in the end, South Africa fell short by 28 runs.

WEST INDIES TAKE THE EARLY INITIATIVE IN THE SERIES! A clinical performance from the Windies as they were right on the money while defending this total and this is also their biggest win over the Proteas in this format. Brandon King has a big smile on his face as he gets the win on his captaincy debut. However, we must talk about Reeza Hendricks as he played an exceptional knock for South Africa albeit in a losing clause.

19.5W

OUT! TIMBER! Matthew Forde goes full and quick and spears it in at the stumps, Ottniel Baartman stays back in his crease and clears the front leg for the big heave across the line but is beaten all ends up. The ball goes on to smash into the stumps and it's all over. South Africa are bundled out for 147 and West Indies win by 28 runs.

Ottniel Baartman is the last man in.

19.4W

OUT! CAUGHT! Matthew Forde does eventually get his man but what a knock that was from Reeza Hendricks. Back-of-the-hand slower ball, pitched up right around middle, Reeza Hendricks looks to get under it and lifts it high towards deep mid-wicket. The elevation is there but not the distance and Kyle Mayers settles himself under the ball to take an easy catch.

19.30

Full again and around middle, Reeza Hendricks doesn't get under it and hits it straight to long on.

19.26

SIX! This is some hitting from Reeza Hendricks and this is now his highest score in T20Is. Pitched up right in the slot on middle and leg, Hendricks smashes the ball across the line and over deep square leg for a biggie.

19.14

FOUR! Oh, that is tentative bowling from Matthew Forde but he just about gets away with it. The ball slips out and Forde ends up bowling a high full toss on the hips, Reeza Hendricks helps it behind square leg for a boundary.

Matthew Forde (2-0-17-1) to bowl the last over.

Commentary

We are back for the run chase! The umpires are back out in the middle and so are the players of West Indies. It will be the pairing of Reeza Hendricks and Quinton de Kock who will open the innings for South Africa. It will be Matthew Forde who will get proceedings underway with the ball for the Windies. Let's go...

... The Run Chase ...

Right then, South Africa require 176 runs to win and take a 1-0 lead in the series but it might not be as straightforward as it seems especially given that the wicket is holding and West Indies have three quality spinners in their ranks. The opening pair will be key to the chase and it should be an entertaining watch. Join us in a few minutes' time for the run chase.

Andile Phehlukwayo, the star with the ball for South Africa is down for a chat. He starts by saying that Brandon King was going well and it was tough to bowl with the new ball. Adds that he wanted to use the slower ones to take the momentum away and it worked for him. Mentions that the wicket is not that easy and there is a bit of a spin as well. Says he hopes it becomes easier to bat and they are able to chase it down. Ends by saying that he is just backing his skill and tries to play around with the seam and bowl with consistency.

South Africa will be quite pleased with how the first innings eventually panned out and will go into the break full of confidence. It wasn't the best of starts from the Proteas bowlers but debutant Ottniel Baartman got rid of Johnson Charles but that was the best it got for a while. However, after the drinks break, Andile Phehlukwayo bowled a fine spell, picking up three wickets and that helped South Africa run through the middle order as Baartman carried on the good work as he too got three wickets and rounded off a fine debut performance. Lungi Ngidi was perhaps one bowler who seemed off-color as he went for 41 in 4 overs and remained wicketless but in the end, South Africa will take this total with both hands.

A fine comeback in the second half of the first innings from South Africa but thanks to a thunderous start, West Indies do still have a decent total on the board. The wicket started off pristine for batting but we have seen in the latter stages that the ball was holding in the deck and the Proteas seamers made full use of it. The Windies' innings started with skipper Brandon King hogging most of the strike and after a patchy first few balls, he started to hit everything off the middle of the bat. At the other end, Johnson Charles struggled and was dismissed early after which Kyle Mayers added a fine stand with King. The pair put on 79 runs before King got out for a sensational 79 off 45 balls and this triggered a collapse. Wickets started to fall in a heap and only Roston Chase managed to weather the storm and stay on till the final overs and took his side to 175 runs.

Just a single to end the innings then! Lungi Ngidi nails the yorker, outside off, Roston Chase only manages to dig it out on the pitch and gets across for just one. West Indies finishes on 175/8!

19.51W

OUT! RUN OUT! Excellent fielding effort from the Proteas! Fuller and on middle, Roston Chase lifts it firmly wide of long off, Wiaan Mulder quickly moves to his right to collect it on the bounce and throws it at the bowler's end, the batter turns around for the second run, Lungi Ngidi shows great reflexes to grab it over his head and takes the bails off in a flash as well. The replay shows that Gudakesh Motie is well short of his crease. West Indies lose their eighth now!

Is that out? The batters had to push for two runs and it looks like the throw from Wiaan Mulder was meant for the keeper's end but Lungi Ngidi has collected it and dislodged the bails. The replays roll in and it is confirmed that Gudakesh Motie is short of his crease. OUT!

19.46

SIX! Roston Chase connects one! The crowd finds its voice again! This another slower delivery, back of a length and on off, Roston Chase fetches it and swats it over the bowler's head, gets enough bat on it for it go over the fence for a biggie.

19.30

A slower bouncer now, on off, Roston Chase looks to ramp it away but misses. He is looking at the umpire who just signals one for the over.

19.21

Short of a length and on leg, slower too, Gudakesh Motie reaches for it and stabs it towards cover-point for a run.

19.11

Lungi Ngidi starts with a slower one, on a length and on off, Roston Chase forces it towards the mid off region for a single.

Gudakesh Motie is the next batter in.

OUT! TAKEN! Ottniel Baartman has three! It is turning out to be a dream debut for him! This is the knuckle ball again, short of a length and on middle, Matthew Forde goes through his slog very early, miscues it off the toe-end of the bat, the ball flies towards deep square leg where Andile Phehlukwayo settles under it and reverse-cups it over his head. West Indies seven down now!

18.51

On a length and angling into leg, Roston Chase works it through square leg for one more.

18.41

A low full toss, on middle, Matthew Forde clips it through mid-wicket for one.

18.31

In the air....safe! A knuckle ball now, full and on middle, Roston Chase goes for the lofted shot but mistimes it high in the air, Wiaan Mulder from long on runs to his front and bit too his left but fails to reach it and collects it on the bounce. They cross.

18.21

Pitches it up a bit, on middle, Matthew Forde drags it towards long on for a run.

18.11

Back of a length and on middle, Roston Chase goes for the big heave, but fails to get under it and mistimes it through mid-wicket for a single.

Done with the pre-match formalities! We can see the South African players spreading out and taking their respective field positions. Brandon King and Johnson Charles are the two openers for West Indies. Spin early from South Africa as Bjorn Fortuin has the new ball in hand. Let's play...

We are not far away from the start of the game but before that, the players from both sides line up for the national anthems. It will be Jamaica's first followed by the national anthem of South Africa. Now, we will be hearing the national anthem of West Indies as well.

As we wait for the action to begin here, you can switch tabs and catch our coverage of the 2nd T20I between USA and Bangladesh where for the second game in the running, USA have beaten Bangladesh and have made history by clinching the three-game series 2-0 with a game in hand.

PITCH REPORT - Nikhil Uttamchandani is near the deck. He starts by saying that it's been a long time since an international game has been played here and says that the boundaries are equal on both sides square of the wicket. Carlos Braithwaite joins him and says that he would want to bowl the spinners from one particular side and the pacers from the other as there is some rough in one area and reckons that the breeze will play a role as well.

West Indies skipper, Brandon King says that they would have liked to bowl first as well but are happy to bat first. Adds that usually, it is a balanced pitch here and adds that there are a few known faces making their way back into the side like Johnson Charles and Fabian Allen. Ends by informing that Shamar Joseph will be making his debut and they are excited for him.

Rassie van der Dussen, the captain of South Africa says that they will bowl first. Adds that they haven't played here for a long time and wants to see how the wicket reacts. He says that the World Cup is the bigger picture but they will also have to respect this series and get accustomed to the conditions here. Informs that Ryan Rickelton and Ottniel Baartman will be making their debuts in this game.

South Africa (Playing XI) - Quinton de Kock (WK), Reeza Hendricks, Ryan Rickelton (On debut), Matthew Breetzke, Rassie van der Dussen (C), Wiaan Mulder, Andile Phehlukwayo, Gerald Coetzee, Bjorn Fortuin, Ottniel Baartman (On Debut), Lungi Ngidi.

West Indies (Playing XI) - Brandon King (C), Johnson Charles (WK), Kyle Mayers, Roston Chase, Andre Fletcher, Fabian Allen, Matthew Forde, Akeal Hosein, Gudakesh Motie, Shamar Joseph (On debut), Obed McCoy.

TOSS - The flip of the coin lands in favor of South Africa and they will BOWL first.

As for South Africa, it will be Rassie van der Dussen who will lead the side and a lot of focus will be on Quinton de Kock who didn't have the best of times in the Indian T20 League and with him now only playing the shortest format of the international game, we might just see him in full flow. Matthew Breetzke is another batter everyone will be excited to watch and the bowling attack comprises of some well-seasoned pacers along with 'Chinaman' Tabraiz Shamsi who can turn the game on his own. All in all, it is set up to be a fabulous series and we should have some close encounters as well. Stick around as the toss and team sheets aren't far away.

Both teams come into the contest without their complete squad given the Indian T20 League is still going on and it will be Brandon King who will lead the hosts in the absence of Rovman Powell. The focus will be on Johnson Charles who has found his mojo back and has made his way back into the national side. Also, the West Indies will have most of their experienced players and have a good mix of youth in the side. Roston Chase has been named the vice-captain and it will be interesting to see what role he plays in the side. The spin duo of Gudakesh Motie and Akeal Hosein will be key and in the absence of the likes of Russell and Hetmyer, we might see a couple of other players stepping up.

Hello and a warm welcome to everyone tuning in. The much-anticipated Men's T20 World Cup is a few days away and a lot of teams have started to fine-tune their game with T20I series galore and now, the co-hosts of the mega event, West Indies welcome South Africa for a three-match T20I series with all three games scheduled to be played at the Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica. Both sides have quite a bit of expectation on their heads and will look to be competitive and get the best out of their squads.

... MATCH DAY ...

With the Indian T20 League reaching its thrilling conclusion, the global cricket scene is heating up as teams prepare for the upcoming T20 World Cup in the US and the Caribbean this June. In a highly anticipated 3-match T20I series, the West Indies are set to host South Africa, promising some electrifying cricket action. Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica will be the venue where this exciting series kicks off. South Africa was the first to announce the 15-member squad for this crucial tour. Surprisingly, Aiden Markram, who will be leading the Proteas in the T20 World Cup, has been rested for this series, along with David Miller and the six-hitting machine Heinrich Klaasen. Rassie van der Dussen will lead the side. Veteran opener Quinton de Kock will be crucial for the tourists, looking to make a strong impact after a quiet stint in the Indian T20 League. He'll be joined by explosive batters like Reeza Hendricks and Matthew Breetzke, who had a fantastic outing with the bat in the SA20 earlier this year. Ryan Rickelton and Rassie van der Dussen will bolster the middle order, supported by Andile Phehlukwayo who holds the ability to smoke a few out of the park as well. Spearheading the pace attack will be Gerald Coetzee, Lungi Ngidi, Wiaan Mulder, and Ottniel Baartman. Tabraiz Shamsi and Bjorn Fortuin will handle the spin department. Additionally, the 21-year-old spinner Nqabayomzi Peter, who has seen a rapid ascent in his career, has also earned a spot on the trip to the Caribbean. The unfortunate injury to their premier fast bowler, Kagiso Rabada, is a significant worry that will undoubtedly weigh heavily on the minds of South Africa. Despite the absence of three key players, South Africa possesses sufficient firepower to present a formidable challenge to the Windies. The hosts, West Indies, announced their fifteen-player squad a few days before the series. With several key players occupied by the Indian T20 League, which is in its final week, Brandon King has been called up to lead the team. He'll be joined by big hitters like Johnson Charles, Andre Fletcher, and Kyle Mayers. Alick Athanaze is also in to boost the batting lineup. Jason Holder, Fabian Allen, Romario Shepherd, and Akeal Hosein will handle the all-rounder duties. The West Indies have picked Gudakesh Motie and Roston Chase for their spin attack, with Akeal Hosein adding to their strength. Obed McCoy, Matthew Forde, and Hayden Walsh are the chosen pacers. Plus, new sensation Shamar Joseph is in the squad, and we might just see him make his international debut. Historically, South Africa has had a slight edge over the West Indies in their matchups. West Indies, still gutted for not qualifying for the ICC ODI World Cup last year, now have a golden opportunity to improve their performance and pose a stern challenge to the opposition ahead of the T20 World Cup. Who do you think will win this series opener?
