Commentary

Right then, that is it from this entertaining game where Uganda registers their first-ever World Cup win while Papua New Guinea still have to wait for that achievement. However, the action in the T20 World Cup continues as another match is going on where Australia is taking on Oman. You can just switch tabs to enjoy all the coverage of that game. Cheers!

Brian Masaba, the victorious skipper of Uganda says it is a special win, the first win at the World Cup and it couldn't get better than this. Adds it's been 3-4 years of hard work from all the players. Tells they got the plans and execution right as compared to the last match, the bowling team set up the win today. Mentions it's a real scrap out there chasing such a low score but credit to Miyagi and Shah for taking the team home. Admits back home they are not expecting them to win the cup but they appreciate the support they are getting.

Assad Vala, the captain of Papua New Guinea says that if they got anything around 100, that would have given them a better chance. Adds that losing too many wickets did not help them and they also gave away too many extras. Mentions that they also could not take the chances and those are the areas that they need to work on going forward.

Riazat Ali Shah is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his match-winning knock. He says it was not easy to bat and he had to stay in there as they lost a lot of wickets. Shares the plan was to stay in and rotate the strike. Tells that the first win of the World Cup is special. Appreciates the support from the crowd and also from back home in Uganda.

Presentation Time...

Earlier in the game, Papua New Guinea posted a well below-par total and only three batters crossed the single-digit mark. Uganda were sensational with the ball and except for Brian Masaba, every other bowler picked up a couple of wickets each. Frank Nsubuga also bowled the most economical spell in the T20 World Cup giving away just 4 runs in his four overs. While chasing, Uganda found themselves reeling at 26/5, but found a saviour in Riazat Ali Shah whose knock got them home.

Papua New Guinea, on the other, will be disappointed as they had Uganda in a spot of bother and were probably ahead in the game. However, some poor fielding and catching proved to be very costly. Charles Amini dropped Riazat Ali Shah on 8 and that was the turning point in the game as he took the game away from them. They also gave away too many extras and when you are defending a low total, you cannot afford to do that. Alei Nao and Norman Vanua picked up a couple of wickets each while Chad Soper and Assad Vala chipped in with one each. They will feel like this was a missed opportunity for them but we have to give credit to them to take the game this deep.

Uganda suffered early blows once again which put them under immense pressure. The openers couldn't make much impact and they lost four wickets inside the Powerplay which turned into 26/5 not long after. It was Riazat Ali Shah who showed his experience and held one end strongly. He did get a life and used that to full advantage and found good support from Juma Miyagi as they added 35 crucial runs together that shifted the momentum towards them. A miscommunication cost the latter his wicket but Shah stayed there and scored 33 runs but could not finish the game. Kenneth Waiswa hit the winning runs to etch his name in the history books.

UGANDA CREATES HISTORY! They get their first World Cup victory in only their second-ever game. It is all smiles in their hut, and the fans present in the stadium are dancing around to celebrate this famous win. It is once again so close, yet so far for Papua New Guinea as they showed great fight defending this low score but their catching and extras let them down in the end.

Commentary

We are back. The players are out in the middle. Roger Mukasa and Simon Ssesazi to open for Uganda. Alei Nao to bowl first.

...THE CHASE...

For Uganda, they will be on cloud-9 right now. Brian Masaba couldn't have asked for a better performance from his group. All the bowlers whenever asked, stepped up for the team and went with a wicket atleast in the spell. Uganda will be confident to chase this down. Right then! The pitch is not an easy one to bat on. Papua New Guinea will be aware that Uganda got bowled out under 60 in their last match against Afghanistan. Can the PNG bowlers upsring a surprise or it will be a walk in the park for Uganda? Let's find out.

Frank Nsubuga who bowled an exceptional spell is up for a quick chat. He says it was a very big moment for him and it was very exciting. Adds that he has waited 43 years to play his first World Cup game and it's special. Tells that the pitch was holding, and he tried to give flight and bowl wicket to wicket as his coach said. Mentions that it is all about looking after the young guys and they look after him as well. Ends by saying that have a good mix in their squad.

A sorry looking batting card for Papua New Guinea. Really it just didn't look like they were comfortable on this slow pitch. The way their batters lost wickets didn't help them. Papua New Guinea lost three wickets in three overs. Lega Siaka and Hiri Hiri showedtried to retrack the innings but once they both fell, Papua New Guinea fell like a pack of cards. Papua New Guinea have gone a step back with the bat as compared to their performance against West Indies.

19.1W

OUT! EDGED AND GONE! Cosmas Kyewuta lands this on a good length and on off, Norman Vanua uses his feet to punch it away but only manages to get a thin outside edge behind where Simon Ssesazi makes no mistake. Papua New Guinea have been bowled out for 77!

The umpires make their way out to the middle followed by the players of both teams who line up for their respective national anthems. It will be Uganda's first followed by the national anthem of Papua New Guinea.

PITCH REPORT - Katey Martin says that there is humidity and dew will be a factor later while it will also skid on. Adds that the straighter hit is the longest one while the square boundaries even and running between the wickets will be important. Darren Ganga joins her and says that it is not that dissimilar to the last game as there will be turn but the pacers will get swing upfront as well. Tells that batting in the middle phase will be crucial and whoever wins, history will be created.

Papua New Guinea (Playing XI) - Tony Ura, Assad Vala (C), Lega Siaka, Sese Bau, Hiri Hiri, Kiplin Doriga, Charles Amini, Norman Vanua (In place of Kabua Morea), Alei Nao, Chad Soper, John Kariko.

Uganda (Playing XI) - Simon Ssesazi, Roger Mukasa, Robinson Obuya, Dinesh Nakrani, Riazat Ali Shah, Alpesh Ramjani, Kenneth Waiswa (In place of Ronak Patel), Brian Masaba (C), Juma Miyagi (In place of Bilal Hassan), Cosmas Kyewuta, Frank Nsubuga (In place of Henry Ssenyondo).

Brian Masaba says that they will bowl first. Adds that their batting performance in the last game was nothing to do with the pitch and they will like to chase. Mentions that they had a chat as a batting group and everyone is on the same page and they will look to put on a better performance. Informs they have made a few changes.

TOSS - Uganda have won the toss and will BOWL first.

It was not the same though for Uganda who took some real beating from the hands of Afghanistan. Both, Papua New Guinea and Uganda have announced themselves on the big stage but who gets off the mark is going to be crucial here. How will the associate teams go against each other? Will Papua New Guinea put the extra effort this time or Uganda will bounce back in style? We will find out soon. Toss and team news coming up.

Hello and welcome to the match number 9 in the ICC T20I World Cup where Papua New Guinea will take on Uganda in Group C. Both teams have played a match each already. Papua New Guinea on the opening day as they faced the Windies but came out on the losing side. They though announced themselves by playing some quality cricket and made the Windies work hard for the two points.

...Match Day....

The ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 continues to deliver excitement, and now it's time for match number 9, featuring an all-associate clash between Papua New Guinea and Uganda at the Guyana National Stadium. Both teams, placed in Group C alongside heavyweights West Indies, Afghanistan, and New Zealand, are hungry for their first win after opening game defeats. Papua New Guinea faced the West Indies in their first match, putting up a valiant fight despite falling short. Their bowlers made the tournament hosts work hard for each run, showcasing resilience. Alei Nao stood out in the pace attack, while Assad Vala and John Kariko excelled in the spin department. For PNG to succeed, contributions from Kabua Morea, Chad Soper, and Charles Amini with the ball will be crucial. On the batting front, Sese Bau was a standout performer, with Assad Vala and Kiplin Doriga providing valuable support. However, Tony Ura, Lega Siaka, and Hiri Hiri will be eager to make a stronger impact. Uganda, on the other hand, had a challenging World Cup debut against Afghanistan. They just could not turn up with the bat, as the Afghan attack proved too strong for them. Roger Mukasa, Simon Ssesazi, and Riazat Ali Shah have been the mainstays of Uganda's batting over the past year and will carry the scoring burden. Alpesh Ramjani, a key player in Uganda's qualification journey, will need to contribute with both bat and ball. Cosmas Kyewuta and skipper Brian Masaba were the stars with the ball against Afghanistan and will look to carry that momentum forward. However, if Uganda are to get the better of Papua New Guinea, the likes of Alpesh Ramjani, Bilal Hassan and Henry Ssenyondo will have to bowl as a unit. Whichever team wins, one thing is certain, we will witness history in the making, as the victor of this clash will secure their first-ever win in a Men's World Cup. Who are you rooting for?
