Commentary

Right then, that's all from this lopsided affair, which saw New Zealand outplay Uganda to register their first win in the tournament. The action continues in the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup on Saturday, June 15th. First up, India will take on Canada in Florida, where the weather has not been kind, but let's hope that we get some action. The game will start at 8 pm IST (2.30 pm GMT). Following that, England will go up against Namibia in Antigua, with qualification on the line for the defending champions. That game will begin at 10.30 pm IST (5 pm GMT). Do join us in advance for the build-up of both games. See you then. Cheers!

Kane Williamson, the skipper of New Zealand says there was plenty of help on the surface and it was nice to do the job in the first half. Tells that there should be ideas and methods for this kind of pitch as we have seen throughout the tournament how different the conditions are. Feels the teams getting exposure at the highest levels helps to learn from. Tells they will recover tomorrow, play their next match and then have discussions on what went wrong in the tournament.

The captain of Uganda, Brian Masaba says that it has been a wonderful experience as a team and the exposure to such a high-quality environment has been eye-opening. Shares that them playing in a World Cup has done wonders for the sport back home. Hopes that Ugandan cricket can use this as a platform and build on it. Tells that he has tried to interact with players from other teams and pick their brains. Further says that he tried to gather as much knowledge as he could. States that this has been a humbling experience for him and thanks the West Indies' fans for being receptive of them.

Tim Southee wins the PLAYER OF THE MATCH award. He says it was a clinical performance and was nice to get a win. Shares they are disappointed not to qualify, they came with high hopes and had the experience in the squad but were outplayed in the first two games and are disappointed it ended so quickly. Mentions they have a proud record in World Cups, and had a nice break coming into the tournament as well.

Time for the presentation ceremony...

Earlier in the game, after being inserted into bat, it was baptism by fire for Uganda. To be fair, Trent Boult and Tim Southee were at their lethal best for New Zealand. Having not faced such high-quality swing and seam bowling before during their careers, the Ugandan batters understandably found it tough to cope. It was more about survival than anything else, resulting in Uganda managing only 9 runs in the Powerplay, the lowest score in all T20 World Cups. There was no respite for the Ugandan batters as Lockie Ferguson and the spin duo of Mitchell Santner and Rachin Ravindra extended the stranglehold over them. On a surface offering help for both pacers and spinners, Uganda never looked assured, and they were eventually bowled out for 40. For New Zealand, Tim Southee was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3 for 4 from his 4 overs, including a maiden.

A brutal end to what has otherwise been a memorable maiden World Cup campaign for Uganda. Their maiden World Cup win against Papua New Guinea was the highlight for them, and the experience they would have gained rubbing shoulders with top nations has its weight worth in gold. Considering the calibre they have shown across their debut World Cup outing, the African nation is certainly going to grow from strength to strength from here. Given the fight shown by the batting unit to drag the innings till the 19th over, a similar fight was expected by Uganda with the ball. While Riazat Ali Shah struggled in the solitary over he bowled, the new ball pairing of Cosmas Kyewuta and Juma Miyagi bowled tightly and made the Kiwi batters work hard for every run.

New Zealand brush aside Uganda to finally get off the mark in the competition. Who would have thought that a team consistently reaching the semis in all ICC limited-overs Men's events since 2014 would take three games to secure their first points? With only 41 runs to get, the Kiwis were expected to get there without any blemishes, but it wasn't to be as Finn Allen's struggling stay came to an end as he fell on 9. Although it has come late, his opening partner, Devon Conway, seemed to regain his touch and struck a few classy boundaries to take his side over the line.

We are back. The players are out in the middle. Finn Allen and Devon Conway to open for the Kiwis. Cosmas Kyewuta to bowl first.

...THE CHASE...

There was no cessation for Uganda as they were facing the music from every bowler who stepped up. They were exposed to some fresh swing early on from Tim Southee and Trent Boult who ended with figures of (8-2-11-5) together and later the spin duo of Mitchell Santner and Rachin Ravindra combined to take four wickets overall. It's a learning curve for Uganda who would have loved a better performance from their batters but looks like a heavy defeat is on the cards for them. New Zealand on the other hand are certain to get their first two points in the tournament. Stay tuned for the chase.

Tim Southee is in for a chat. He says that it was a trick surface and it was important to bring the stumps into play. Adds that there was plenty of offer for the bowlers if bowled in the right areas. Feels that sides that sides that are able to adapt quickly on such surfaces will be successful. Ends by saying that after a busy few months, it was nice to get a good little breather before the tournament.

A good toss to win you reckon for New Zealand. Bowling first, Trent Boult and Tim Southee had their tails up as with fresh seam and a lot of swing they troubled the Uganda batters from the word go. Trent Boult, typically in his style, struck twice in the first over. Uganada were 2 for 3 but it got worse for them as Mitchell Santner came into the attack and he too got a lot of purchase off the deck. Santner got one wicket in his first over while Lockie Ferguson too scalped one in his first spell.

18.4W

OUT! EDGED AND TAKEN! Straight to first slip and Mitchell Santner wraps it all up! Goes touch fuller and slanting in, on middle, Cosmas Kyewuta shapes up to work it away with the angle but takes the risk of playing against the turn. The ball spins away after pitching and catches the outside edge. It goes low and quickly to Daryl Mitchell who stays low to snaffle it.

18.30

Big swing and a miss! Tosses it up, full and around off, Cosmas Kyewuta has a hack across the line but the ball dips on him and turns past the outside edge.

18.20

Slows it up and pulls the length back a touch, on off, Cosmas Kyewuta reaches out to defend but it spins away to beat the bat.

18.10

Darts this one in, full and on the pads, Cosmas Kyewuta uses his feet and tucks it to mid-wicket.

17.50

On the money but Cosmas Kyewuta sees it off! Full and attacking the stumps, on off and middle, Cosmas Kyewuta gets right behind the line of the ball and solidly defends it back to the bowler.

Cosmas Kyewuta to face the hat-trick delivery!

17.4W

OUT! AS PLUMB AS IT CAN GET! Two in two for Tim Southee! A bit fuller and it nips back in off the deck from Southee, on off and middle, Juma Miyagi shuffles across a bit but plays all around it. The ball does not rise at all and it scoots through to beat the inside edge and raps Miyagi low on the front pad. The dreaded finger goes up again but Juma Miyagi reviews it. There is nothing on UltraEdge and it is three reds on Ball Tracking. Southee on a hat-trick now with Uganda 9 down.

Juma Miyagi is next to bat.

17.3W

OUT! PLUMB IN FRONT! Tim Southee has his second wicket of the night! Stays over the wicket and delivers it on a good length with a cross-seam, on middle, Fred Achelam walks across his stumps as he tries to work it away on the leg side with the angle. The ball keeps a bit low and it skids through to rap Achelam on the front pad. An easy decision for the umpire and Achelam opts not to take the review.

17.20

Serves it on a good length, nipping back in, on off, Fred Achelam advances down the track and pats it to mid on.

17.10

Begins with a full delivery, in the channel on off, Fred Achelam extends his hands and tries to dab it on the off side but plays away from his body and gets beaten on the inside edge.

A bit quicker and fuller as well, attacking the stumps, Fred Achelam walks right across his stumps and gets low to sweep it down to fine leg for a run.

We are moments away from the start of this Group C clash but before that, Kane Williamson and Brian Masaba will lead their respective sides out for the national anthems. It will be the national anthem of Uganda first followed by that of New Zealand.

PITCH REPORT - Ian Smith is near the deck. He starts by informing that a fresh surface will be used for this game and that a slight breeze is blowing across the ground. Adds that 65 metres and 60 metres are the dimensions of the square boundaries with the straight boundary being 74 metres long. Carlos Brathwaite joins him and says that he likes the look of the surface first up. Tells that this strip is a lot barer and there is a spot around a good length that could trouble the batters. Reckons that the wicket should play better than we have seen at this venue so far.

Brian Masaba, the captain of Uganda says they are not happy with their batting in the last couple of games and have a chance to do well today. Informs that Ronak Patel and Fred Achelam are back into the team. Feels that there is some moisture on the surface and it could help the bowlers with the rain around.

The captain of New Zealand, Kane Williamson says that they will bowl first. Shares that they want to make first use of this fresh surface, which looks quite tacky. States that they try to pick the best playing XI for every game and informs that they are going with the same team as the last game. Tells that it is frustrating not to go through and now it is about focusing on what is in front of them. With this being a new surface, it will be important to assess the conditions quickly.

Uganda (Playing XI) - Ronak Patel (In for Roger Mukasa), Simon Ssesazi, Robinson Obuya, Riazat Ali Shah, Alpesh Ramjani, Dinesh Nakrani, Kenneth Waiswa, Brian Masaba (C), Fred Achelam (WK) (In for Frank Nsubuga), Juma Miyagi, Cosmas Kyewuta.

New Zealand (Unchanged Playing XI) - Devon Conway (WK), Finn Allen, Rachin Ravindra, Kane Williamson (C), Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, James Neesham, Mitchell Santner, Tim Southee, Lockie Ferguson, Trent Boult.

TOSS - New Zealand have won the toss and will BOWL first!

No disrespect to Uganda but as an associate team they were coming into the tournament as the least favourite to reach the next round. However, they have still managed to win a game against PNG and be ahead of their opposition, New Zealand. Yes, the Kiwis who kicked off their campaign almost when all the teams had played a game or two, had an upper hand to know the conditions from outside but the Kiwis failed to adjust quickly and are sitting at the bottom of the table without a single point. It’s hard for the semi-finalists of 2022 T20 World Cup to end their campaign so early. Now, both the teams have to play for pride and salvage something to cheer their supporters. Stay tuned for toss and other updates.

The ICC T20 World Cup is shaping up nicely for the Super Eights round and we welcome you all to the clash from Group C where New Zealand will take on Uganda. Two teams who have officially been knocked out of the tournament face each other.

...Match Day...

Match number 32 of the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup is upon us, featuring New Zealand taking on Uganda at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba, Trinidad. New Zealand's worst fears in the 'Group of Death' have materialised, with losses to Afghanistan and the West Indies putting them on the brink of elimination. They were hoping for PNG to pull off an upset over Afghanistan, but it didn't happen, resulting in them getting knocked out alongside Uganda and Papua New Guinea. In their two games so far, Kane Williamson and his team have looked underprepared. Despite some improvements in their bowling in the last match, their batting remains a concern. Bringing back Tim Southee proved effective, with Trent Boult and Lockie Ferguson also performing well, but Mitchell Santner had an off day and will be looking to bounce back. The Kiwis need their batting unit to step up, with Kane Williamson, Daryl Mitchell, and Devon Conway needing to deliver alongside Rachin Ravindra. As for Uganda, after their maiden World Cup win against Papua New Guinea, they were overwhelmed by the West Indies. The tournament debutants were still mathematically in contention until the game between Afghanistan and PNG, but an Afghanistan win put an end to their hopes along with New Zealand's. Facing top-tier teams has been challenging for Uganda's batters, and it won't get any easier against New Zealand. Their batting mainstays, Roger Mukasa, Simon Ssesazi, and Riazat Ali Shah, need to rise to the occasion. With the ball, Alpesh Ramjani, Frank Nsubuga, and Brian Masaba will form the spin attack, while Cosmas Kyewuta will spearhead the pace attack, hoping for support from Dinesh Nakrani and Juma Miyagi. Can Uganda produce a spirited fight and challenge the Kiwi might? We shall find out soon enough.
